A Med Student's Rants
Published on January 22, 2005 By The Horned Rat In Misc
Hello, again. First, I would babble about the minor issues surrounding my life, then I'll delve into the gist of this blog, that of a 2nd year med student in UQ med school in Oz.

Met my cousin and her family while I was doing some grocery shopping at Coles. What a surprise! They haven't moved in yet, probably will do so at the end of the month. I also seem to have some probs with the car that I'm going to buy. It won't start. the battery is as flat as a pancake. Gonna have to call a mechanic on Monday, after my orientation at Princess Alexandria Hospital. The good thing is that the seller would deduct the mechanic's charges from the cost of the car. That's very good of him. Any help on how to get it started? My friends are of no help. They suggest I call RACQ insurance!

I'm gonna reveal some more of my background. I was part of this first batch of students from the University back home with the University of Queensland here. Out of the 20 in our embattled first cohort, 12 made it into med school. Out of this 12, 5 did not make it to 2nd year; 2 dropped out and the other 3 are gonna repeat 1st year, given another chance by the kind and generous Government of His Majesty. Kinda sad really. What I find sadder is that of all the 310 of us in 1st year, only 8 didn't make it. What irks me is when I met one of them 2 days ago, he just got a brand new phone. Again. One of those new small sized ones which slides up to reveal the keypad. Then they turn around and say that they have not enough allowance from the Government of His Majesty...
One of the dudettes who dropped out ended up working in a bank, I heard. A BBiomedSc degree in a bank will only get you so far. The other one's gonna be a lab rat for BND$103 a day. That's good, putting the degree to work. But when the bills come in, you'll need more than BND$103 a day.

We had our orientation yesterday. That was good fun, catching up with friends I haven't seen in the past 2 and a half months and exchanging stories of what we did during our electives. What unnerved me was what the professors have to say about 2nd year. It's the tough one, alot to study, free time=study time, and most importantly, not to fall behind in learning as the weeks roll on. I've seen the content, and to fall behind would be disastrous. Hmmm sounds like fun already. We'll see how it goes.

Cheers
